Regional Materials
Many green building standards include incentives to encourage instances where raw materials are extracted, processed and manufactured into a product, and this process all occurs within a certain distance from a project site. These materials and products are considered to be Regional or Indigenous Materials, and using them helps reduce the environmental impacts resulting from transporting goods long distances. Mr.greenpoints can help you to think globally and act locally – just enter the mileage required by your green building standard into the zip code search under “Refine your search results”. Mr.greenpoints will give you the mileage from your project to the manufacturing location.*** Contact the manufacturer to determine the percentage of material weight that is extracted, harvested or recovered locally.
***Please note that mr.greenpoints calculations are related to zip code “centroids”, which are the determined center point of a zip code area. While this method is much more accurate than a city-to-city determination, these calculations should not be considered exact. This is especially true if one of the zip codes included is in a remote part of the country. Generally speaking, if the listed mileage is +/- one or two miles above or below your green building standard’s threshold distance you should confirm the actual documented distance through additional calculations – although you will need GPS coordinates to out-do mr.greenpoints!
