Rapidly Renewable
Search Attribute Abbreviation = RR. Rapidly renewable resources are harvested within a ten year or shorter cycle. Wherever possible, use rapidly renewable resources instead of non-renewable resources such as fossil fuel-based plastics or slowly regenerating resources like old growth wood. The intent is to reduce the use of “long cycle” and finite raw materials. Increasing the harvest of rapidly renewable resources can help prevent encroachment into fragile habitats and ecosystems.
As with all materials, in analyzing rapidly renewable resources give careful consideration to the point of origin relative to your project site. While using renewable resources can help conserve other precious raw materials, the energy that is expended in transporting materials great distances must be taken into account.
A few examples of products containing rapidly renewable resources are:
- cork flooring
- bamboo flooring
- wool rugs
- cotton insulation
- linoleum flooring
- wheatboard cabinets
- strawboard sheathing
- agrifiber door cores
