Certifications
In some cases, products will receive a certification from an outside party that verifies that the product has a certain claimed attribute. These outside parties are some very trusted names in the world of construction and sustainability standards – Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), International Code Council (ICC), and Underwriters Laboratory (UL), to name a few. These certifications validate that products are likely to contribute toward earning points in the LEED rating systems and other green building programs. By seeing the product certifications clearly presented, you are empowered to decide what value you place on claims for certified versus non-certified products.
Following is a breakdown of the Certifications and how they’re displayed on mr.greenpoints in the Cert column:
Certified Wood
FSC Products containing FSC certified wood, where all entities in the supply chain hold FSC Chain of Custody certificates.
FSC-R Products certified by FSC to contain recycled wood.
SFI Products containing Sustainable Forestry Inititiative (SFI) certified wood, where all entities in the supply chain hold SFI Chain of Custody certificates.
SCS Certified
SCS-R Products certified by SCS to have recycled content – either pre-consumer, post-consumer, or both.
FLRSCR Products certified by SCS to meet the indoor air quality requirements of the FloorScore® program. Products that meet Floorscore requirements also meet CDHS requirements. (see ID Certifications for more on CDHS)
SCS-IA Products certified to meet the requirements of the SCS Indoor Advantage™ program. This program requires furniture and seating to meet rigorous testing requirements for emissions contributing to indoor air quality.
SCS-IAG Products certified to meet the requirements of the SCS Indoor Advantage Gold™ program. This program certifies a range of product types as meeting rigorous testing requirements for emissions contributing to indoor air quality. Products that meet IAG requirements also meet CDHS requirements. (see ID Certifications for more on CDHS)
SCS-NAUF Products certified by SCS to contain no added urea formaldehyde.
SCS-NAF Products certified by SCS to contain no added formaldehyde.
Green Label certified
GL Products certified to meet the requirements of the Carpet & Rug Institute’s Green Label program for indoor air quality.
GLP Products certified to meet the requirements of the Carpet & Rug Institute’s Green Label Plus program for indoor air quality. Products that meet GLP requirements also meet CDHS requirements. (see ID Certifications for more on CDHS)
Greenguard® certified
GG Products certified to meet the requirements of the Greenguard® program for indoor air quality.
GG-CS Products certified to meet the requirements of the Greenguard Children & Schools program for indoor air quality. Products that meet GG-CS requirements also meet CDHS requirements. (see ID Certifications for more on CDHS)
Green Seal certified
GS Products certified to meet the requirements of the Green Seal standard applicable to the product type.
Environmental Choice certified
EC Products certified to meet the requirements of the EcoLogo Environmental Choice standard applicable to the product type.
SAVE certified
SAVE Products that have been evaluated by ICC Evaluation Service under their Sustainable Attributes Verification and Evaluation™ Program (SAVE) and sustainability claims have been validated.
Underwriters Laboratory certified
UL-ECV Products that have been evaluated by Underwriters Laboratory under their Environmental Claims Validation™ program and sustainability claims have been validated.
